X-network MMS a reality for Telecom, Vodafone users

28 Sep 2005

Telecom New Zealand and Vodafone NZ customers can now send photo and video messages to each other between the two networks. Using Vodafone’s PXT product and Telecom’s Photo Messaging service, customers can create, send and receive MMS messages to each other on selected handsets – a service previously barred to them because of incompatibilities in the operators’ networks; Vodafone operates a GSM service, while Telecom operates a network based on CDMA technology. Vodafone’s general manager for consumer marketing, Larrie Moore, said he expected to see a significant rise in MMS volumes as a result of the deal, mirroring the explosion in SMS messaging that occurred in the wake of a cross-network SMS deal between the two cellcos in 2001.
