Government looks into fixed/mobile convergence

28 Sep 2005

The Japanese government yesterday launched a public constitution to gather information about whether the public would want to see fixed and mobile services converged into a single unified system. The government, which expects to publish a final report on the matter by the end of the year, would expect to launch a unified service by 2007 if the plan was adopted. The move has come following a trend for users to abandon their fixed line phones in favour of mobile services. NTT has already started examining the possibility of consolidating the two services.
