Competition watchdog launches formal investigation into mobile market

27 Sep 2005

The Albanian Competition Authority has launched a formal investigation into the country’s mobile market to examine possible cases of anti-competitive conduct from its two network operators Vodafone Albania and AMC Albania. The case has been brought in the wake of recent newspaper stories which suggest that Vodafone Albania is charging its contract users three times more than their counterparts in Italy. According to Biznesi, Vodafone Albania subscribers pay EUR2,340/year compared with just EUR922 for customers signed up with Vodafone in Italy. Vodafone Albania and AMC have long been at the centre of continued accusations regarding alleged anti-competitive practice, both from the media and from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
