China Mobile added more users than China Unicom in August

China Mobile (Hong Kong), the listed arm of China’s largest mobile operator, signed up 3.643 million new users last month, up from 3.581 million in July, to end August with over 231 million GSM customers, 170.158 million of whom are pre-paid. Meanwhile, its rival China Unicom ended the month with 91.33 million customers, up from 90.47 million at the start of month, while its CDMA network attracted 340,000 new users to lift its total to 31.66 million. Unicom said that its GSM subscriber base included 45.16 million pre-paid and 46.17 million contract users, while the CDMA split was 29.15 million billed users, versus 2.51 million on pay-as-you-go tariffs.
