Mobile subscriber base tops five million

According to telecoms watchdog Suptel, more than 5.2 million people owned a mobile phone in Ecuador at the end of August, up from 3.546 million at the start of the year and 2.398 million in December 2003. América Móvil’s unit Porta led the way with 3.38 million (including 3.075 million pre-paid users), followed by Telefónica Móviles’ Movistar Ecuador subsidiary with 1.65 million users (79% pre-paid). Meanwhile, Ecuadorean owned Alegro PCS had 178,154 subscribers, including 31,767 using pre-paid options.
