KPN speeds up 3G rollout

15 Sep 2005

Dutch cellular operator KPN Mobile is improving the coverage of its UMTS 3G network by deploying UMTS High Site (UHS) technology. KPN is using masts which are up to 80 metres high at 20 locations across the country. The masts provide coverage equivalent to five normal height antennae and will be sited near existing television towers. Telecompaper reports that three UHS towers are in place already, with a further three due to be installed by the end of the year and the remaining fourteen due in 2006. The UHS model has been used successfully by KPN’s German subsidiary E-Plus, which has installed 200 of the taller masts.
