Personal focuses on GSM expansion and data offerings

Argentine mobile operator Telecom Personal plans to invest ARS270 million (USD92.6 milion) to expand its GSM network capacity by 150% during 2005. So far this year, the Telecom Argentina subsidiary has installed two new GSM switches in the cities of Córdoba and Rosario. For the remainder of the year, its main objectives are to significantly expand capacity and quality of voice services, upgrade its voicemail facilities, deploy a new SMS platform to increase texting capacity and implement a new WAP solution to enable it to introduce a range of new value added data services. Personal said that it finished August with a total subscriber base of 5.1 million, up from 4.8 million at the end of June. In August it transmitted nearly 700 million SMS and a million MMS messages.
