France Télécom is to spend EUR1 billion to improve its internet division Wanadoo, according to reports in UK Sunday newspaper The Business. Wanadoo executive Olivier Sichel is quoted as saying that much of the money will be spent on installing equipment in local exchanges across Europe, as part of the programme of so-called Local Loop Unbundling (LLU). Wanadoo, which was formerly known as Freeserve in the UK, aims to have around 50%-65% of its customers connected directly to its own network, rather than through lines leased from BT.
