FT to spend EUR1 billion on rebranded broadband

France Télécom (FT) has said it will spend EUR1 billion over the next three years to position its newly converged Orange UK business as a leader of the mobile and broadband markets. The investment is part of the telco’s plans to bring merge its Wanadoo internet operations into its Orange branded mobile business. Wanadoo currently has around 2.2 million UK internet customers, around a third of which are on high speed connections. Much of the EUR1 billion will be spent on ramping up broadband users on unbundled local loop (ULL) lines, which FT sees as vital for delivering the kind of high-bandwidth applications it hopes will spur take-up. Earlier this month, FT announced a string of special deals for customers taking both Orange and Wanadoo services.
