Israel’s largest wireless operator Cellcom has announced the commercial launch of i-mode services. The cellco first announced a tie-up with i-mode proponent NTT DoCoMo of Japan in November last year; the deal was the Japanese company’s eleventh, having already struck similar arrangements with telcos in Germany, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Russia and Australia. The new service, which includes access to 80 websites in both Hebrew and English, will operate over Cellcom’s GPRS network, and customers will have a choice of five compatible handsets. Monthly packages will be priced between ILS9.90 and ILS29.9. Cellcom hopes to attract 30,000 users by the end of the year and 500,000 within three years.
