TOM Online, Skype sign China joint venture deal

6 Sep 2005

Chinese wireless internet portals operator TOM Online has entered into a strategic joint venture with Skype, building on a relationship between the two which began in November 2004 with the launch of a simplified Chinese version of the latter’s VoIP product. The new venture is designed to build on the pair’s success thus far – TOM Online has signed up 3.4 million Skype users to date – and further develop communications services, particularly in the mobile internet access arena. The Chinese firm will hold a 51% stake in the new JV company and Skype the remainder.
