Taiwan’s sole PHS mobile operator First International Telecom (Fitel) says expects its customer base to reach 1.1 million by the end of this year, up from 770,000 in 2004. Fitel’s stronghold has traditionally been the northern region of Taiwan where 734,000 of its total subscriber base lived at the start of the year. It hopes to expand its presence in the central region from 6,000 to 60,000 users and from 30,000 to 100,000 in the south by the end of 2005. Earlier this year it forecast a 45.6% rise in full-year 2005 revenues to TWD7.5 billion, and a 325.3% hike in net profits to TWD370 million.
Fitel was established in April 1997 as an islandwide paging service provider and received permission to operate a personal handyphone service in February 2000. The company received its concession in April 2001, launching in the 1900MHz band a month later.
