State telcos still lead the way

Ecuador’s telecoms regulator Suptel has released its latest fixed line penetration figures. At the end of July the country had 1.64 million fixed line customers, equivalent to 12.7% lines per inhabitant. The two state-run telcos, Andinatel and Pacifictel, claim the lion’s share of the market; Andinatel has more than 878,000 customers while its sister company claims 662,000. Cuenca-based municipal telco Etapa is the largest of the alternative providers, with 102,000 subscribers, while the west-coast operator Linkotel has less than 1,000.
