Telecoms revenues up 5% in 1Q

1 Sep 2005

UK regulator Ofcom’s latest ‘Communications Market Quarterly Update’ reports that total retail telecom revenues grew 5% to reach GBP36.6 billion (USD66.2 billion) in the twelve months to 31 March 2005. Revenues in the mobile sector continue to drive growth, increasing 17% to GBP3.3 billion in Q1 2005 and constituting more than a third of all telecoms revenues. The report also made special mention of broadband services, saying that by June 2005 there were 8.1 million broadband connections in the UK. The growth has been driven by alternative DSL ISPs, which have been rapidly gaining market share over the past two years, to a point where they now comprise 47% of all broadband connections; cable companies have a combined 28% market share of the high speed internet market.
