DGT to licence data-only WiMAX providers

Taiwan’s Directorate General of Telecommunications (DGT) has revealed plans to licence the country’s first WiMAX operators, but will ban use of the service for voice telephony for fear of protests from 3G operators. DGT said in a statement that it will permit WiMAX operators to offer only data and video services, so as not to harm the prospects of the country’s fledgling 3G services.
