Telfort trials HSDPA

25 Aug 2005

Dutch cellular operator Telfort has announced plans to launch a 3.5G service based on HSDPA technology in the second half of next year. Telfort, which is the subject of a EUR1.12 billion takeover offer from Dutch market leader KPN, has been working with Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei to trial the new system, and has demonstrated a call with data speeds of up to 1.4Mbps. The telco plans to launch PC data card products first, followed by HSDPA-enabled handsets. The proposed KPN-Telfort merger is still being examined by regulators and KPN has threatened to walk away from the deal if authorities call for too stringent competition measures to be introduced.
