Cofetel wants DLD phased out

25 Aug 2005

The Mexican telecoms regulator Cofetel says it expects to see the concept of domestic long-distance telephony to disappear within five years. BNamericas quotes the regulator’s planning manager, José Luis Peralta, who says it will gradually expand local calling areas until there is just one national call sector, with all calls within Mexico charged at a single rate. Cofetel reduced the number of local zones from 1,400 to 397 between 1998 and 2002.
