Spectrum policy delayed until 2006

23 Aug 2005

India’s much-anticipated wireless spectrum policy, originally set to be unveiled earlier this year, will not be ready before the end of the year, according to local press reports. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the draft policy, which still requires the views of the defence and finance ministries to be incorporated into it. The DoT plans to allocate spectrum on a technology-neutral basis for GSM and CDMA-based operators. The delay will have the knock-on effect of setting back the award of 3G licences, which can only be issued after the policy is announced.
