Operators say they will cut fees

23 Aug 2005

According to local paper Estado de Sao Paulo, Brazil’s fixed line operators have said they are prepared to decrease the monthly charges for users, and create a special package for low-income customers. The operators have said they will reduce the basic fee from BRL38 (USD15.81) to BRL26 for families that have an income lower than two minimum wage salaries. Communications Minister Helio Costa has said he wants to cut this threshold further, and possibly abolish the monthly fee altogether, although it is unlikely that the operators will agree to this.
