Nextel calls foul over SMS

22 Aug 2005

NII Holdings’ wireless subsidiary, Nextel de Mexico has called upon the country’s antitrust authorities to make other mobile operators exchange text messages with its customers. The cellco found it impossible to set up SMS arrangements with the four incumbent mobile operators despite appealing unsuccessfully to the Mexican telecoms regulator Cofetel to intervene. It has now turned to the Federal Competition Commission (CFC) which has finally launched an inquiry into possible anti-competitive practices by market leader Telcel. Nextel also believes that the country’s other leading players Telefónica Móviles, Unefon and Grupo Iusacell, are deliberately keeping it out.
