China Mobile signs up 3.58 million users in July

The world’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, China Mobile, added 3.58 million new users in July to end the month with 227.36 million customers. The figure compared favourably with 3.27 million net additions in June and 3.4 million in May, but the cellco is finding it harder to sustain growth in a maturing market. China is the world’s largest cellular market with more than 360 million users, but with most of the country’s wealthier urban population already signed up, China’s telecoms firms have been forced to look towards lower income users in more remote parts of the country, putting a dampener on growth. The nation’s number two mobile operator China Unicom added 1.26 million customers in July, its lowest monthly addition for more than three years.
