Telecom New Zealand has revealed that it is planning to upgrade its CDMA2000 3G networks next year to double data transmission speeds. Telecom will spend between NZD10 million and NZD15 million installing EV-DO Revision A equipment, increasing peak download rates to 3.1Mbps, while peak upload speeds will rise to 1.8Mbps. Average data speeds are expected to be around 1Mbps. Telecom’s only rival in New Zealand’s cellular market, UK-based Vodafone, launched its own 3G service last week.
