UK cable operator Telewest has announced sweeping upgrades of its broadband packages with speeds of up to 10Mbps available by next year. The company says it will be upgrading services on a region-by-region basis starting next month. Its entry level GBP17.99 a month service will be upgraded from 512Kbps to 2Mbps, its mid-range GBP25 package will increase from 1Mbps to 4Mbps and its ‘elite’ GBP35 bundle will now offer speeds to up to 10Mbps, up from the current 4Mbps. The news came on the back of Friday’s announcement of a return to profitability in the second quarter. Telewest, which is expected to announce plans to merge with larger rival ntl anytime soon, added 15,000 subscribers during the three months to June and reported strong gains at its content division.
