Orange earmarks USD50 million for network expansion

France Télécom says it plans to invest USD50 million in upgrading Orange Dominicana’s GSM network this year, including the provision of mobile internet services. The subsidiary’s president Frederic Debord confirmed that his company still needed additional frequency to expand its national coverage, and the cash injection would help it to more quickly achieve this goal. Orange Dominicana now has 92% coverage of the country and 900,000 mobile subscribers, or a 36% share of the market. The French parent has ploughed more than USD350 million into the unit over the last five years and is keen to invest more in a country where demand is currently outstripping supply.
