Telecoms users hit 14 million mark – and climbing

The number of people with a fixed line or mobile phone reached 14 million in June, according to reports from official state media. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), over USD7 billion has been invested in the country’s telecoms industry since it was liberalised four years ago. In 2000 the total subscriber base stood at 566,374, a figure which had soared to 10.2 million by the end of last year, including 1.2 million fixed line users. Overall teledensity in Nigeria now stands at around 9%, up from 0.4% in 2000.
