Services in the Bush to be improved

9 Aug 2005

Australian treasurer Peter Costello has said he will back a plan to use proceeds from the forthcoming AUD30 billion sale of Telstra to improve telecoms services in the Bush. National Party leader Mark Vaile called for a AUD2 billion trust fund to be set up to pay for the expansion, and while senior ministers have agreed to the plan, they have said they would rather limit spending to AUD100 million a year. The government, however, appears to be in no hurry to sell Telstra, and so it is not known when the funds will be available.
