Hong Kong’s Hutchison Telecommunications International said yesterday that it is unlikely to bid for a 3G mobile licence in Malaysia, although industry observers believe the company may still enter the country’s wireless sector via a different route. Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao recently reported that Hutchison was eyeing one of two
UMTS concessions being put out to tender by the Malaysian government on 22 August. Hutchison has until 11 November, when the tender closes, to change its mind. If it sticks with its decision not to place a bid it could still opt to enter Malaysia as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) at a later date.
