Telstra’s fate to be decided soon

3 Aug 2005

According to Prime Minister John Howard, the Australian government will decide whether to go ahead with the privatisation of Telstra and the sale of its majority 51.8% stake in the cellco ‘within the next few weeks’. The process has been delayed because of opposition from the National party, which claims that phone and internet services will suffer in rural areas if Telstra is fully privatised. The ruling Liberal Party needs the support of the Nationals for the privatisation to go forward.
