South Africa’s third largest mobile operator Cell C yesterday announced that it is now carrying 80% of its own calls traffic, with just 20% handled by Vodacom, with whom it has a roaming agreement. Cell C has 2.5 million active subscribers and plans to increase this with the deployment of around 300 additional base stations. Cell C’s network now covers 63% of the country’s population and 8.7% of the geographical land area – well ahead of the 2007 target of 60% and 8% respectively.
