VNPT comes up short of targets

29 Jul 2005

Vietnam’s largest fixed line and wireless group, VNPT (Vietnam Post and Telecoms) has posted disappointing subscriber and revenue figures for the first half of 2005. It recorded a total of 1.4 million new subscribers in the first six months of the year, representing only 38% of its full year target. Revenues for the period were VND15.3 trillion (USD1.01 billion), accounting for 46% of its forecasted yearly total. VNPT, which runs the country’s two largest mobile operators, VinaPhone and MobiFone, has faced stiff competition this year from newcomer Viettel, which claims to have signed up around 700,000 wireless customers since launching last October.
