E-Plus ups ante in German price war

29 Jul 2005

Germany’s third largest mobile operator E-Plus is set to launch a new discount package, under the name BASE – the brand used by its parent company KPN in Belgium. From 1 August it will offer a monthly flat rate of EUR25 for calls to fixed line numbers and other E-Plus and BASE customers. The move is in response to low-budget services launched by MVNOs mobilcom and debitel, which both launched discount services in June to rival E-Plus’ Simyo package, launched at the end of May, which features SIM cards available only online. Market leader T-Mobile has also lowered call prices this year, and introduced minute bundles. On Wednesday it announced the introduction of unlimited calls to fixed line networks and the T-Mobile network for a flat monthly fee.
