Unconfirmed figures show that Chile’s mobile market has exceeded the expectations of regulator Subtel, which predicted that the number of subscribers would reach ten million by the end of June 2005. The country had over 9.5 million mobile phone users at the end of the first quarter, and market leader Movistar Chile has reported adding 350,000 in the second to take its total to 5.257 million. Local papers have reported that second placed provider Entel PCS, which finished the first quarter with 3.4 million subscribers, has also seen ‘high’ growth in its customer base. Third operator Smartcom’s Spanish parent Endesa said that its local unit’s subscriber numbers went up by 100,000 in the three months to reach 1.7 million. Entel’s official figures are released on 3 August.
