Local press report on China Unicom break-up plans (again)

According to Sohu.com, the Chinese government is once again mulling whether to break up China Unicom and divide its assets between China Netcom and China Telecom. According to the source China Unicom’s CDMA business would go to China Netcom (which operates predominantly in southern China) while its GSM business would be given to China Telecom (which mainly operates in the north). According to the website, the plans are currently in draft format and could be formally announced by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) as soon as August.
