Ericsson has won a contract to expand Velcom’s GSM mobile network in Belarus. The USD33 million deal will see the vendor delivering 300 new base stations and 200 Mini Link radio-relays, providing services for an estimated two million new subscribers. Ericsson will also commission an intelligent platform with capacity for one million customers, allowing Velcom to begin offering advanced services such as VPNs. The two plan to extend the reach of their cooperation, and are discussing possible plans for developing 3G and WiMAX technologies. The GSM expansion project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
