KDDI has reported that for the three months ended 30 June 2005 net income rose 1.8% to JPY52.6 billion (USD471 million), despite a 0.8% fall in revenues to JPY714.3 billion. Sales at its wireless operation au rose by 10.2% on the back of solid customer growth which took its customer base to over 20 million. The number of customers connected to its 1x EV-DO (3G) network, branded WIN, rose to 4.32 million during the course of the quarter. Blended ARPU for the combined customer base for the quarter was JPY7,050, of which JPY5,240 was generated by voice services and JPY1,810 by data. Figures for the 3G customer base show a much higher blended ARPU of JPY9,970, with a more equal split between voice and data of JPY6,480 and JPY3,490 respectively. By the end of September 2005 KDDI anticipates that it will have ostensibly completed rollout of the 3G network, having achieved 99.9% population coverage; it will now begin to deploy 1x EV-DO Rev A equipment, which will boost speeds on the network to a maximum of 3.1Mbps.
