True to take lead as Thai broadband numbers expected to double

21 Jul 2005

Fixed line operator True Corp says it expects the number of broadband users in Thailand to have more than doubled by the end of the year to 400,000. The company says it is well on its way towards the target, having signed up more than 300,000 subscribers itself. True had a broadband market share of around 85% at the end of 2004. State-owned incumbent TOT ended the year with little more than 10,000 broadband subscribers, but expects that figure to reach 200,000 by the start of 2006, generating annual revenues in the region of THB1 billion. The telco has been actively seeking to tie up deals with broadband content and service providers to make its service more attractive. The nation’s third fixed line network provider, TT&T, has not released subscriber figures, saying only that it has 1,600 broadband switching networks in the provinces with capacity for up to 30,000 internet broadband ports.
