Virgin growth continues; albeit at a slower pace

19 Jul 2005

UK MVNO Virgin Mobile saw its phenomenal growth falter in its fiscal first quarter of 2005, as it signed up around half as many new subscribers in the three months to the end of June as it did in the corresponding period of 2004. Virgin added 77,000 net active customers in the period – those who have used their mobile SIM in the last 90 days – compared to 150,000 in 1Q2004, taking its total active base to 4.109 million. Rolling annual ARPU fell from GBP127 (USD221) in the previous quarter to GBP123 (USD214), despite an 18.3% rise in service revenues y-o-y. The cellco rolled out its first ever post-pay wireless call plan during the quarter, having built its customer base on offering purely pre-paid tariffs.
