Investment group Apax has revealed plans to merge its German telecoms unit Tropolys with Versatel Germany in a bid to become a serious rival to incumbent telco Deutsche Telekom. Swedish group Tele2 has agreed to sell Versatel’s German business to Apax for EUR565 million once its acquisition of Dutch parent Versatel Telecom International has been completed. In a further attempt to raise its market profile, Apax is considering a bid for Vodafone’s German subsidiary Arcor as well as smaller regional providers in the country.
