Alternative ops trial VoIP

15 Jul 2005

Canadian equipment manufacturer Mitel says it is close to completing preliminary tests of voice-over-IP services with long-distance carriers in Mexico. BNamericas reports that Mitel has been trialling VoIP with alternative carriers including Alestra, Avantel, Axtel and Protel, but not with the country’s former monopoly operator Telmex. Mitel’s initial trials of VoIP technology are due to end next month, with customer trials beginning soon after. Mitel says the Mexican VoIP market could be worth USD500 million a year by 2008 if the regulator Cofetel introduces the necessary legislation.
