Porta must repay customers

14 Jul 2005

Ecuador’s largest cellular operator Porta has been ordered to reimburse subscribers who have been overcharged for more than five years. The country’s telecoms regulator Suptel says Porta must repay pre-paid users who have been charged from the second they press the ‘send’ button rather than from the moment the call is connected, adding between 10 and 20 seconds onto each call. Suptel claims América Móvil-owned Porta was overcharging up to 1.8 million customers between March 2000 and May this year. The amount Porta must repay each customer has not yet been decided.
