ADSL surpasses cable

Portugal’s telecoms regulator Anacom has announced that for the first time the country has more ADSL connections in service than broadband cable lines. Anacom says that at the end of March there were 499,000 customers using ADSL technology for high speed internet access, while the number of cable modem users stood at 464,000. ADSL subscriptions grew 18.7% in the first quarter of 2005, while cable modem customer numbers were up 6.6%. Broadband penetration stood at 9.2% by the end of March.
