Russian mobile group Vimpelcom – consistently in the news due to the ongoing feud between its shareholders Telenor and Alfa Group – has reported a 5.6% growth in its customer base in June, ending the second quarter with 35.1 million subscribers. Of the total 909,650 were customers of the group’s Kazakhstan business KaR-Tel, with the remainder spread across 75 regions in its domestic market.

Vimpelcom has also announced the commercial launch of EDGE services over its GSM network in the Moscow region. The cellco began trials of the technology in Moscow, Vologda and Murmansk in December 2004.
