Russia’s largest mobile operator MTS signed up 1.04 million net new cellular subscribers in June, taking its domestic customer base to 34.09 million, up from 30.25 million at the end of the first quarter of the year, the operator said in a statement. According to preliminary figures, MTS now has a share of around 35% of the Russian mobile market.
Outside of Russia, MTS added a further 670,000 customers to its businesses: Ukrainian Mobile Communications saw its base increase by 590,000, Uzdunrobita in Uzbekistan reported growth of 10,000 and the 49% owned MTS Belarus signed up 80,000 new users. MTS finished the month with a consolidated total of 44.07 million subscribers across all its operations, up from 38.69 million at the end of March. The group has also recently entered the Turkmenistan mobile market via its purchase of Barash Communications Technologies Inc (BCTI), which has around 60,000 users.
