Mobile subs reach 1.7 million

11 Jul 2005

The number of mobile subscribers in Azerbaijan now exceeds 1.7 million, up from 1.2 million at the start of the year, according to the country’s Minister of Communications Ali Abbasov. The cellular penetration of 20.6% eclipses that recorded by the fixed line sector, which totals around 1.2 million lines, a teledensity of 14.6%. The Azerbaijan wireline market is dominated by national PTO AzTelecom, majority owned by the Ministry, whilst the mobile sector is a duopoly between the TeliaSonera-Turkcell controlled Azercell and Israeli owned Bakcell.
