Anatel lifts TIM/Brasil Telecom dispute deadline

11 Jul 2005

Brazilian regulator Anatel has waived the 18 July deadline for operators Telecom Italia mobile (TIM) and Brasil Telecom GSM to solve the conflict of interests caused by the overlap of their mobile licences. The two operators both own mobile concessions in the same area, contravening telecoms legislation stating that it is not permitted for a controlling partner to hold licences in the same area as a company it controls. The two companies have suggested a merger to solve the problem, although this has been opposed by other shareholders.
