Government says Cyta’s monopoly must be broken

8 Jul 2005

The Cyprus Communication Commission has warned that Cyta’s monopoly on the telecoms market must be curbed, if it is to comply with EU guidelines. The regulator ordered Cyta to abolish abnormally low rates for its mobile offering, on the basis that it was deterring competition in the market; Cyta’s only competitor in the mobile sector is Scancom (Areeba), which held only 3% of the subscriber market at the end of 2004.
