TeliaSonera studying MVNO purchase

7 Jul 2005

Scandinavian telco TeliaSonera is looking at a takeover of Norwegian mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) Chess and Sense. The Swedish-Finnish operator says it has been granted exclusivity in negotiations with Vollvik Gruppen, which owns 100% of Chess and Sense, and has so far signed agreements with shareholders representing around 90% of Vollvik’s ownership. Between them the two MVNOs control 310,000 customers, 7% of the Norwegian cellular market. TeliaSonera is currently the second largest mobile operator in Norway thanks to its 100% stake in NetCom; it has around 1.5 million customers while market leader Telenor claims 3.1 million.
