Medis teams up with mystery cellco for fuel cell trials

7 Jul 2005

US-based fuel cell developer Medis Technologies has teamed up with ‘a broadly affiliated United Kingdom mobile telephone operator’ to test its latest fuel cell Power Packs for mobile handsets. Going to great lengths to conceal the identity of its partner company in the trials, Medis would say only that the mysterious cellco is ‘a recent entrant into the market, offering to its customer base, which has already reached eight million subscribers, one of the most advanced video mobile (3G) networks in the world’. The power packs utilise direct liquid fuel cell technology and are intended to be a secondary power source for the handsets. Medis is also conducting similar trials in the US and if the trials prove successful the cells could be introduced commercially by the second half of 2006.

Despite Medis’ attempts to keep its partner anonymous, TeleGeography research analyst Adrian Read shrewdly observed: ‘Sounds like Hutchison 3G UK to me’.
