Irish telecoms watchdog ComReg says it is planning to introduce a ceiling on mobile termination rates between operators, following a lengthy consultation process. Mobile termination charges are the wholesale rates paid by fixed and wireless operators to connect to mobile networks. ComReg disapproves of the charges being indirectly passed on to customers by operators factoring the costs into their retail prices and says that it wants mobile voice call rates to be purely cost orientated. Having designated cellcos Vodafone, O2 and Meteor Mobile as having significant market power in the mobile termination business, ComReg will now cap their charges.
