Lucent wins PHS deals

US equipment manufacturer Lucent Technologies has been awarded two separate contracts to provide limited mobility systems in China. China Telecom subsidiary Gansu Telecom and China Netcom division Shandong Netcom have asked Lucent to expand personal handyphone system (PHS) networks. The deal in Gansu Province requires Lucent to expand networks in 14 cities, while the Shandong contract will expand capacity to around five million customers. At the end of 2004 there were around 65 million PHS users in China, where services are marketed under the name Xiao Ling Tong.
